Little T asked:

Hi,

I have a question I'd like to ask you guys. My mom recently broke her deep fryer.

She decided that she wanted to attempt to repair herself: she unplugged her deep fryer, turned it upside down, took a ***** driver, remove the back cover and start pushing around with her ***** driver at the wires she saw.

I told her not to do that, but she told me since the deep fryer was unplugged, that there was no risk. I would like to know if there are any electrocution hazard in trying to tamper with a deep fryer home appliance even if it is unplugged. I know the risk does exist in the case of a microwave oven like shown in this article:

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/5061.html

This shows that people die each year by trying to repair an unplugged microwave oven. Is the same true for other home appliances such as deep fryers?

Both my sisters and my mom told me it was safe, even though they are not engineers or have any significant background or training in repairing electrical components. I myself have limited background, but I have always been told by others that some devices, such as computers, can still electrocute someone even if it is unplugged.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Herbert
